The joint project of members of the Association of Czech Graphic Artists Hollar and Japanese artists, titled Across the Continent, presents a selection of contemporary graphic works from both countries, focusing primarily on woodcut and linocut techniques. The opening will take place on April 5, 2025, at 4:00 PM, and the exhibition will be on display until June 1, 2025.
The works of Czech artists do not aim for a direct imitation of traditional Oriental art; rather, through their character, expressive means, inventiveness, and precise execution, they resonate with the individuality of Japanese style. The exhibition does not place Czech and Japanese works in opposition but instead seeks to foster a dialogue between the two graphic traditions.
The artistic scene of the Far East continues to draw from its rich cultural traditions to this day. The craftsmanship, decorative quality, and iconography—particularly focused on figurative and floral motifs and landscape scenery—have characterized Oriental art across centuries. The influence of Japanese aesthetics and art on European culture was especially evident at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In Czech art, it came to the forefront with the Art Nouveau movement and continues to inspire artists across various cultural domains.
